Wednesday Evening Book Club:
"The Knitting Circle" by, Ann Hood. Well this was a great discussion book as we found our group divided. Some of the group felt it was very predictable and that the sad stories each person Mary met in the knitting circle were just to much to want to read about. While some of the group found the stories meant something and saw that there was a need for Mary to hear, that she was not the only person to ever suffer a loss, and that there was hope for a future never free of the memories, but you would move forward in your life and it was alright for Mary to become someone other than a woman who's daughter had died. I liked the book very much and the references of how knitting could be healing was great for me. I guess because I crochet and knit I understood what a calming effect it has in helping you to work out your problems and think things through while accomplishing something. It works for me all the time! This book is about Mary and how she loses her 5 year old daughter and the journy she takes to heal from something so dificult. her mother whom she does not have a good relationship with tells her to join this knitting group and somehow in the stories she finally does. After she does she starts to open up to the other women of the group as well as finding comfort in the knitting. She learns stories of heartache each one of them have had and she begins to see that not everyone is free of some type of hurt in their lives. They are all knitting to heal, and I have heard from a very wise older women that her parents kept them busy and told them that "idle hands did the devils work". Perhaps I felt some of the things she has told me over the years were in this book and I guess that was the connection that drew me in so much. Well I guess I have gone on long enough, you may want me to keep some of it a secret, so when you read it you will see how it makes you feel.
